Halibut Fish Merchant
About
This painting was made from a photograph I took in 2009. I was with my family, walking through a well-known ‘shook’ as it is called in Israel, which translates to open market. It is filled with hundreds of merchants selling anything from food to clothes to jewelry, and it is a one-of-a-kind experience that I recommend to anyone travelling in that part of the world. I was fascinated with this particular merchant and took several photographs of him. It would be over 10 years until I painted him. I’ve actually shown this painting to other people, and they say they recognize him, as he is one of the mainstays of the market.
