Horse and buggy man watching motorcycle man

This painting was made from a photograph I took in the spring of 2023. I was about to go on a tour of the famous Colosseum when I noticed this older man looking in apparent disdain at the motorcyclist zooming past. The whole scene felt like a representation of the tension between the past and the present. There is the ancient Colosseum in the background, the man on the buggy representing a period of time from the more recent past, and the motorcyclist representing the modern world. I was particularly drawn to the older man’s facial expression as he seems to be so bothered by the younger man.
